Carol Peterson (Blyth Danner) lost her husband years ago.  She is in her early 70’s and lives by herself in a nice house with her dog, Hazel. She has three close female friends, with whom she plays golf and bridge, who live nearby in an extended care facility.  (There are multiple scenes with the four of them interacting that are quite humorous.) One of her friends talks her into going to a speed dating event that is LOL funny!

Carol is well-adapted to her loneliness, but she has to put Hazel to sleep, which is a very difficult loss. Shortly after Hazel’s death, her house is invaded by a huge ugly rat, which is so terrifying that she chooses to sleeps outside.  The new pool man, Lloyd (Martin Starr), a man in his 30’s searching to find his way, finds her sleeping by the pool the next morning and asks her if she is okay.  She asks him to try to catch the rat, but the rat is a better escape artist than Houdini, so Lloyd can’t find him, nor can the pest control guy who arrives shortly thereafter.  Lloyd and Hazel strike up an interesting and unusual friendship.  What they say to each other is often funny and profound. Carol starts re-connecting to aspects of herself that had been dormant for many years, like starting to sing again.

Carol is also attracted to Bill (Sam Elliott) whose mutual interest in her sparks within her long-latent desires.

Danner gives an AWW performance and Starr, Elliott and the three friends also do a fine job.

The Co-writer/ Director (Brett Haley) has created a little gem about love, loss and confronting your fears, that you should try to catch before it leaves the theaters.
